This past month we have had 2 small gardens in Church Hill that we were lucky enough to create from the dirt up.
This first garden on 32nd Street begged for a cozy front with some garden accents and style. After looking through my favorite Smith and Hawkins garden accent book, we decided on this funky fence and pergola.
Plantings include some sturdy perennials like salvias, gaillardia, amsonia, lavender and thyme. Perky zinnias border the front picket. We put a ” Peaches and Cream” trumpet coral vine at the base of the pergola to soften the wood accent. This client is already poking in a few fun plants he has found, which is exactly what he was supposed to do!
Our second garden has a lovely view of St John’s church from the front porch. Again, there was nothing but dirt and mulch. In the front, we dug below a foot of mulch to find old brick. We used that brick and the client’s slate. The guys and I played with how much inventory we had to make a geometric shape under a millstone we had lying around.
In the back, we made allowances for a future screened in porch. Between that and the wear and tear her 3 dogs have on the yard, we put in zoysia grass where the porch will and a Sherando buff gravel walkway edged in steel with a brick circle accent, a small bluestone retaining and replanted her inventory of plants.
We love Church Hill gardens and feel so lucky to be able to contribute to the unique southern charm is still has today.
